Getting What You Want

There are so many blogs out there confirming we can have what we want if we want it. The problem with most of us is we don't know what the heck we want, but we sure do know what we don't want.

How many of you have gone to a restaurant and said to the waiter, “Just bring me anything.” I know I haven't. And what do you think is more important eating out and getting the right thing from the menu or getting the life you want? We know the routine in the restaurant to make sure we look over the menu and order it correctly so the waiter will bring us the right thing. But we go through life day after day and “hope” we get what we want. Have you taken the time to figure out what you want? Why not?

Let me guess you don't have time. Well then let me ask you this, do you love your life? If so that's great you are dong it right. But if the answer is no then maybe you should make time to figure out what it is you want from your life. It doesn't have to be so profound as to what you want to be when you grow up, you may need more experiences for that. But how about what you want your typical day to look like. What kind of work do you want to do? What leisure activities do you enjoy? Dream and dream big!

Many people told me to stop dreaming and get a handle on reality. But please let me tell you that this is YOUR reality. You can mold it, shape it and customize it however you see fit. OK Jen, that's all fine and dandy but how do we do that?

My first answer is... I know it can be done and I am going to do some experiments and find the true answer for you. I'm sure that just pissed you right off, but seriously I have done some true soul searching and have found some things that do work and I am about to share them with you, but there are still some fine tuning that must happen. I would love for you to join me in this time of experimental trials and see if we can figure this out together.

Please know this. It is very difficult to explain but once you get it you get it. Like when you were younger and asked your mom, “What does falling in love feel like?” And she would say something like, “Well honey, you'll know it when you feel it.” Great mom thanks! But it's true. Try to explain what falling in love feels like to someone who has never done it. It's difficult! So bear with me while I explain as best as I can what this process feels like.

We all can pick one thing we want in life, weather it be more money, a healthier body, a partner who doesn't drive us to drink and a boss who appreciates us. =) So pick one thing and lets work on that. A lot of what I am about to tell you has to do with your feeling inside about what you want. I have recently opened a new fitness facility called ONE Ultimate Health. I started this journey some several years ago when I could feel something growing inside of me, (and not an alien baby neither, but that would make for a great blog entry). It was some small voice that kept telling me I was meant for something bigger, something great! I had no idea at the time what it was or how it was ever going to develop. I kept moving through life and that feeling got stronger and louder. I was led in many different directions to get to where I am today and how I am here with you!

I will tell you more of my story over the course of the next few months as this story unfolds. But for now, do you have that growing desire to be someone? Do you have that inner voice that is directing you to make something of yourself? Then what is holding you back? I would have to guess there's a lot. Some of it may be fear, or not knowing what to do next, or just having no idea what your friends or family would say if you told them that you were going to be big someday!

But let's just say you are going to move forward and figure out what it is you are meant to do. Here are the steps that have worked for me.

  1. First of all get clear on what you want. Give as many details as you can. Back in March of 2011 I wanted a fitness facility that had the following: Great location. Large boot room that can be divided in half between boot and personal training. A room for my nutritionist. A room for my massage therapist. A community room for team training and workshops. I wanted an office with a window. I wanted locker rooms or a way to put locker rooms in. I wanted it to be near the tart trail for our $5 5k. And the big one that I will tell you to make note of, is that I wanted it to be easily affordable.

  2. That was back in March. I still have the sheet I wrote it on and that leads me to step number 2. Write down your dream. In as much detail as you can. Similar to what I have done above. Write so much detail that if someone else read it they would also get a clear picture of what you want. That's why restaurants have pictures for most of their meals. Then you get a picture of it and it will come out just like that. So.. I wrote it down. As soon as I wrote it I hung it up in my office (at home, since it didn't manifest overnight) and read it several times a day.

  3. Visualize your goal. Do this until you get the feeling of what it would be like to have this goal in hand. I felt excited, powerful, confident and peaceful. I can't really explain the peaceful part but it comes in handy during this process and you will notice it's a common denominator.

  4. Finding peace is VERY comforting. It's like explaining falling in love, only I say it's better. I can bring it about at any time. It's almost like being cold and slipping into a warm bubble bath. It's being cold and getting under the covers with someone you love who has warmed up the blankets for you. Feeling at peace is... indescribable but you will know it once you feel it. =) (OK I know that's not fair but seriously you will know – And hopefully through these next blogs you will get that feeling)

  5. The next step is the hardest for me but I will focus on this over this experiment and see if I can't manifest my goals faster. Once you order it, you must let go and trust. When I am at a restaurant I order my food then I get back to chatting with the company I am with. I let go and trust I have explained clearly what I want and the waiter has heard me and will promptly bring me what I ordered. It is that same process here. Order what you want then let it go.

  6. This is the fun part. Once you are clear with what you want and you have completed all the steps you must now take action. You cannot sit around and wait for the pounds to fall off, or our mister prince charming to come riding up to the front porch. It does not work that way. I know dammit. But seriously if it was easy...It wouldn't be worth it. But once you have placed your order and you are at peace that your order is coming then you must listen for the action cues to come up. Like I said this part is fun. Because you will be moved to take certain action steps that may not make any sense at all, but do them anyway. This is all part of the process.

Here is one an example. I wanted to hire a female massage therapist for my facility. I put out an ad and received only one potential prospect, a male. I interviewed him and during that time I was thinking I wanted a female. He was qualified and had the credentials, but wasn't female. Part of me didn't want to hire him but I kept getting this feeling that I should. So.. I did. I got the feedback from my boot campers that I had expected. They didn't want a male MT they also wanted a female. However he did offer a service to my business it just wasn't in massage. He did a lot in my facility to make it more professional. He painted, in which I hate doing, he purchased our front lobby countertop. He hung all the lobby tables and helped power wash the gym floor before it got painted. After that he decided this wasn't for him and he quit. Interesting huh!? I was moved to hire him against my better judgement as a MT but he served his purpose in other areas. Don't forget to take action to help achieve your goals. Pay attention as the clues may be subtle at first but as time goes on and you are not taking action the clues will get louder and more persistent.

Now you have the steps to start designing you future. Let's all get to work and create. Post here what it is you are desiring and keep us updated on your progress. Til next time be at peace.
