The Power Process

What area of your life gives you a sense of power? It is not necessarily confidence I am referring to but a feeling of control. Sometimes it's our place of employment. Take a teacher for example. In that teacher's classroom they may have total control of the kids, great classroom management and a behavioral plan in place so each kid can grow into a successful adult. This is an area of strength for this person. She feels in complete control of the classroom and her kids. She was not born with this power she had to acquire it.

She at one point may not have felt as powerful as she does now. She may have started out scared, nervous and feeling inadequate but she kept moving along to get to where she in now feeling powerful in her classroom.

This is the kind of power I am talking about. Not power over kids or a classroom, but a feeling of confidence and control over whatever it is you’re doing. You can have this in any area of your life where you want to take control. You have the power within you to be able to do that. Just like anything else there is a process to follow in order to get that end result for which you are looking. 

Picture a pyramid. The top of the pyramid if where you have the most power. As the pyramid gets wider toward the bottom, your power and control are weaker. This may also indicate that there are more areas in your life where this power is weaker. It doesn’t have to stay that way. There is a solution to gain more power in more areas of your life. Here’s how.

We can take the process apart. We can go back and look at the beginning before we became powerful. Then dissect that process and apply it to another area of our life where we want more power and control.

For instance take the teacher again. There was a time when they were not as powerful as they are now. They first had to decide to become a teacher. Then they had to find a study program, an education, to help them get those results. Then they had to take action. Go to class, study and do the necessary work. After they have gone through enough of the program then they can start the student teaching portion of the program. This will give them the hands on experience they need to become an expert in this field. This is when they get to practice what they have learned in the college classroom and they are on their way to becoming a successful educator.

This is the process for gaining power in your life. It may not take as long as it does to become a teacher but it's the process nonetheless.

Here are the steps:

1. Make the decision to get started.

2. Find the education needed to teach you more about the subject you want to be powerful in.

3. Take action. Do what is necessary to get the job done.

4. Practice, practice, practice. Take what you have learned and apply it over and over again until you feel that sense of power in your life.

Now repeat this process again and again in other areas of your life. Soon you will feel nothing will get in your way of true success and happiness.

Very thought provoking. I am embarking on a small step in gaining power over the employment area of my life and starting with a very small, not high-paid, online article position. I started by creating a personal blog that is unpaid. The hope is that I gain enough experience to apply for the better-paid sites. I have been wanting to be a writer professionally for as long as I can remember, but it always seemed overwhelming and hopeless. Once I sat down with my husband and mapped out the baby steps it became a lot less daunting and things started to happen. It makes applying that philosophy easier in the other areas of my life where I am lacking control.
